It is common knowledge that sleep is vital to our health but also to the way we look. A lot of people just do not get enough sleep or have bad sleeping habits and their mental health, physical health and looks suffer as a result.

Sleeping for the right length of time every night helps the body and the mind to repair itself and this is essential for us to be able to function on a day-to-day basis.

This fact has been proved by studies over the years. The average person should get between six to eight hours of sleep a night. Unfortunately, some of us do not get this amount of sleep every day due to work or family commitments.

Over time, we start to suffer physically and mentally as a result of this lack of sleep. The six to eight hours of slumber should be natural sleep and not sleep that is the result of sleeping pills, for example.

In this article, we will give you some useful tips on what to eat and other habits to adopt so that you get your beauty sleep every day. These tips will also help if you have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep.

  • Adopt a fixed bed time – You should try and go to bed at the same time every day because this regulates your body clock so that your body knows that it is bedtime. It is also recommended to go to bed before midnight in order to get a good night’s sleep.
  • Caffeinated drinks – It is advised not to have drinks that contain caffeine or consume alcohol before going to bed. These types of drinks tend to make it harder for you to fall asleep.
  • Afternoon meal – This might come as a surprise to you but studies have shown that what you have had to eat during the early afternoon can affect how well you sleep at night. Therefore, you should look into the meals you been having at that time and work out whether they could be contributing to you not getting your beauty sleep.
  • Spicy food – People who have lots of spicy food tend to pass wind or gas and are known to find it hard to drift off to sleep for the night.
  • Sugary foods – You should be careful about the amount of sugary foods you consume throughout the day, especially in the evening. Not only are sugary foods bad for your health, but they tend to give you an energy boost which will make it harder to get to sleep at night.
  • Eat dinner early – If you wait until your body has fully digested your food before going to sleep, you will usually sleep better. Therefore, it is advisable to have you dinner as early as possible. It is recommended to have your dinner by 6pm. This gives your body plenty of time to digest your food before bedtime.
  • Wind down – A lot of people have trouble getting to sleep because they do not switch off just before bedtime. You need to spend time calming your mind down to help you drift off easily every night. There are many things you can do to relax your mind such as reading a book, having a bath or just listening to some music. The goal is not to do anything that requires a lot of thinking.
  • Bedroom lights – The light levels in your bedroom will affect the quality of your sleep. It is recommended that you sleep in a dark room. Some people find it helpful to have curtains that block outside lights. You should also not keep electronic gadgets such as your phone in your bedroom because it will tend to light up during the night and disturb your sleep. Electronic gadgets also emit radiation which can be harmful to your health.
  • Drink water – Studies show that dehydration at night leads to an increased heart rate which can lead to anxiety. As a result, this can disrupt your sleep. It is a good idea to have a glass of water before you go to bed every night to keep you hydrated during the night. You can choose to have your water about an hour before you go to bed to give you enough time to go to the toilet before tucking yourself in. You should also have a glass of water next to you at night and have a little sip from it when you wake up during the night. This will help you remain hydrated and also wake up with more energy.
  • Exercise – People who do regular moderate exercise usually sleep better because exercise not only increases tiredness but also regulates the blood flow which promotes good sleep.
